Introduction
Welcome to the Bulletin Board
It's 11 PM on a school night. Your parents think you're asleep, but you're hunched over your Commodore 64, the monitor's glow the only light in your room. You pick up the phone, listen for dial tone, set it in the modem cradle, and type ATDT555-0500. The modem screams its familiar handshake—carrier signal, negotiation, that satisfying final chirp—and suddenly you're no longer alone. Thousands of miles of copper wire connect you to a community of strangers who've become friends, trading messages and files and secrets in the dead of night.
Welcome to the Emulator.ca Systems Bulletin Board—your gateway to the online world that existed before the Internet, when "going online" meant monopolizing the family phone line and praying nobody picked up the extension.
The Bulletin Board System—the BBS—was the Internet before the Internet: a grassroots network built by enthusiasts in basements and spare bedrooms. In the 1980s, anyone with a personal computer, a modem, and a spare phone line could become a System Operator—a SYSOP—running their own node of a global electronic community. No corporation controlled it. No government regulated it. It was pure digital democracy: people connecting with people, one phone call at a time.
BBS culture created phenomena we now take for granted: online handles, message threading, file libraries, multiplayer door games, reputation systems, and the norms of digital community. Before Facebook, before Reddit, before forums of any kind, there were bulletin boards—and they were glorious.
Our BBS offers 24-hour access (except during system maintenance on Tuesday nights from 2-4 AM) and supports multiple callers simultaneously. Whether you're seeking lively discussion, challenging games, useful files, or simply the company of fellow computer enthusiasts, you'll find it here.
The first bulletin board system—CBBS, created by Ward Christensen and Randy Suess—went online in Chicago on February 16, 1978, during a blizzard that kept its creators trapped indoors. Within years, thousands of BBSes sprouted across North America and beyond. By the late 1980s, major metropolitan areas had hundreds of boards to choose from, each with its own character: FidoNet nodes passing echomail across the globe, pirate boards trading warez in the shadows, legal boards hosting discussions on every topic from programming to politics.
The BBS era began to fade in the mid-1990s as commercial Internet access became affordable. But for nearly two decades, dial-up bulletin boards were the beating heart of digital culture—and many of the people who built the modern Internet cut their teeth posting messages and playing door games on local BBSes.
The Emulator.ca Systems Bulletin Board features:
- Five Message Boards — General discussion, gaming, technology, announcements, and marketplace
- Threaded Discussions — Reply directly to messages and follow conversation threads
- Three Door Games — Test your luck and skill while earning credits
- File Library — Documentation, software, graphics, and newsletters organised by category
- Private Messaging — Correspond directly with other registered users
- User Directory — Browse member profiles and see who is online
- Credit System — Earn and spend credits on games and special features
The SYSOP (System Operator) works to maintain a welcoming atmosphere for all callers. Please treat fellow users with courtesy and respect—behind every handle is a real person.
What Makes This Special
Consider what you're about to experience:
Asynchronous Communication: Post a message tonight, and someone across the country might reply tomorrow morning. This was revolutionary—before email, before text messages, the BBS gave ordinary people the power to communicate across distances without real-time connection. You could have a conversation that unfolded over days or weeks.
File Sharing: The file library contains programs, graphics, and documents uploaded by users and curated by the SYSOP. Before the web, this was how software spread: downloaded one BBS at a time, shared and re-shared, propagating across the dial-up network.
Door Games: Gaming with strangers you'd never meet in person, competing for high scores and bragging rights. The social gaming that dominates today's internet began here.
Community: Behind every handle is a real person. The GAMING board has regulars who've been arguing about favorite consoles for months. The TECH board has experts who've helped dozens of newcomers solve their first hardware problems. You're joining a community—not just logging into a service.
Quick Start
Ready to dive in? Here's what you need to do:
- Dial 555-0500 using your modem (300, 1200, or 2400 baud)
- Type NEW at the handle prompt to create your account
- Choose a handle (your online name) and password
- Press M from the main menu to browse message boards
- Press D to try the door games and win credits
That is all it takes to join the community. The rest of this manual covers each feature in detail, but you now know enough to get started. Welcome aboard!

Door Games
What Are Door Games?
In the BBS world, "door games" were external programs that users could launch through the board's software. The term "door" referred to the mechanism by which the BBS would "open a door" to hand control to a separate executable—a clever architecture that let BBSes offer games without the SYSOP having to write them.
Door games became a defining feature of BBS culture. Legends like Trade Wars 2002, Legend of the Red Dragon, and Barren Realms Elite spawned communities of dedicated players who logged in daily to manage their turns. Some players spent years building empires, forming alliances, and waging wars across interstellar trade routes or fantasy kingdoms—all through text on a terminal screen.
Our BBS features three door games, each offering a different style of play. Win credits to increase your standing in the community, or simply enjoy the classic BBS gaming experience.

BBS Etiquette
The Unwritten Rules
BBS etiquette developed organically over years of community experience. These weren't arbitrary rules—they emerged because the BBS was a shared resource with real costs. Phone lines could only handle one caller at a time. Storage was expensive (a 20MB hard drive cost hundreds of dollars). And behind every board was a SYSOP who paid real money for equipment, phone lines, and electricity.
The guidelines below reflect the accumulated wisdom of the BBS era. Following them ensures everyone has a good experience—including the SYSOP who makes this community possible.
DO:
- Be respectful — Treat others as you'd want to be treated
- Stay on topic — Post in the appropriate message board
- Use descriptive subjects — Help others find relevant threads
- Share knowledge — If you know something useful, post it!
- Say hello — Introduce yourself in the GENERAL board
- Report problems — Send the SYSOP a private message
- Log off properly — Use Q to quit; do not disconnect abruptly
DON'T:
- Flame or harass — Personal attacks are not tolerated
- Post illegal content — Software piracy, etc.
- Spam the boards — Keep posts meaningful
- Hog the line — Other callers may be waiting
- Share passwords — Your account is your responsibility
- Abuse door games — Play fair, don't exploit bugs
Violations of these guidelines may result in loss of credits, posting privileges, or account termination. The SYSOP's word is final!
Call Time Limits
To ensure fair access for all users:
- Maximum session: 60 minutes per call
- Please limit to 2 calls per day during peak hours (6-10 PM)
- Unlimited calls during off-peak hours
If you notice another caller waiting to connect, consider concluding your session to allow fair access.
Troubleshooting
Common Issues
Can't Connect
- Verify phone number:
555-0500 - Check modem settings: 8-N-1
- Try a lower baud rate (300 baud is most reliable)
- Line may be busy — try again in a few minutes
Garbage Characters on Screen
- Check your terminal emulation (ANSI or VT100 recommended)
- Verify parity setting (should be NONE)
- Try toggling local echo on/off
Password Not Accepted
- Passwords are case-sensitive — check CAPS LOCK
- Contact SYSOP via separate channel for password reset
File Download Fails
- Enable XMODEM receive in your terminal software FIRST
- Try again — line noise can corrupt transfers
- Lower your baud rate for more reliable transfers
Contact the SYSOP
For technical issues or account problems, send a private message to the handle SYSOP after logging in. Emergency contact can be made through voice line during business hours.
